What is water equivalent?

The water equivalent of a substance is equal to the amount of water needed to absorb the same amount of heat as that substance does for one degree of increase in temperature. 

Therefore, water equivalent of a body equals the product of its mass and its specific heat.

 Water equivalent = mass x specific heat

Water equivalent = Heat capacity
