It is an allegorical poem that brings forth the Christian themes of sin, penance and redemption. It expresses how a thoughtless and impulsive deed can result in a lifetime of guilt and repentance.

The RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER conveys the meaining of sin in the christian religion. The ancient mariner had commited a sin and other sailors also supported his act once by which they suffered a lot. And even afterwards, the ancient mariner had to narrate the story to anyone. 

This is all due to the sin commited by the Christian person.
