what occupation was followed by the tribal people ?
write few lines on any of the three tribes mentioned in this lesson?

Tribes obtained their livelihood from agriculture, hunting and gathering and herding. The following is the description of some of the tribes:

  1. The Gonds- They lived in a vast forested region known as Gondwana. They practiced shifting cultivation. The tribe was divided into smaller clans each of which was ruled by a raja. The Gond kingdom was divided into garhs each of which were controlled by a clan. They were further divided into units of 84 villages known as chaurasi. The centralisation of Gond kingdom during the time of Mughal rule led to discrepancies in their previously equal society. Brahmanas started to exercise influence and received grants from Gond rajas. Garha Katanga was the most prosperous Gond state.

  2. Ahoms- They migrated to the Brahmaputra valley from Myanmar in the 13th century. They created a new state eradicating the old order of the bhuiyans. They were defeated by the Mughals under Mir Jumla. However, Mughal control did not last very long. Ahoms were adept at use of firearms and gunpowder. The state depended upon forced labourers known as paiks. The society was divided into clans or khels. Art and theatre was encouraged in Ahom society and important Sanskrit works were translated into local language.

  3. Bhils- They were spread across western and central India. Many of them became settled agriculturists by the 16th century while some went on to become zamindars. However, most of them still remained hunter gatherers.
