In 1854, the Government declared its intention of " creating a properly articulated syatem of education from primary to thr university stage ". Sir Charles Wood sent a Dispatch to the Governor - General of India Lord Dalhousie with some reccomendations. This is famous as Wood's Dispatch.

Reccomendations -

  • Setting up of education departments in the Provinces.
  • Universities to be set up in each of the Presidency towns of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras.
  • Government schools to be opened in each district.
  • Govenment grants to be given to private schools and colleges,
  • Indian Educatiuon Service to be introduced to recruit teachers for government insitutions.

In 1854. the english east india company sent an educational despatch to india. it's came to be known as wood's despatch. it emphasized the value of western learning. it outlined many benifits of such an education.

  1. Western learning would enable indians to relaize the advantages of an expanding trade nd commerce.
  2. Western learning would expose indians to the western way of life and create in india a demand for british goods.
  3. Western learning would develop among indians the skills required for administration nd ensure a continous supply of people to work at lower levels of govt.
  4. Since indians would be dependent on the british for their job, they would be loyal to the britishnd want british rule to continue.
