What will happen if cells of epithelial tissue are not completely packed?

epithelial tissues are protective tissues. So, if the are not packed completely they wont be able to

function as protective tissues .This is because epethelial tissues do not contain any interparticular spaces for protection.if the tissues arent completely packed then it wont be able to act as a protective covering.
