when a magnet is freely suspended it points in N-S direction(magnetic north towards the geographical north).Actually how is it possible.According to the fact that only unlike poles attract, the magnetic north is always near to the tha geographical south of the earth. How geographical N can be nearer to magnetic N?If though the bar magnet will not point in N-S direction

Hi Deepak

The Earth behaves like a huge magnet with its north pole in “South direction” and South Pole in “North direction”. So magnetic field lines actually originate from geographical South to geographical North and hence the north pole of any magnet points toward geographic north (or south pole of the Earth’s magnetic field).

You can understand this concept by the given figure
