TheBattle of PlasseyorJang e Palasiwas a decisive victory of the BritishEast India Companyover theNawab of Bengaland hisFrench[2]allies on 23 June 1757. The battle established the Company rule inBengalwhich expanded over much ofIndiafor the next hundred years. The battle took place atPlassey(anglicised version ofPalashi) on the banks of theBhagirathi River(another name ofHooghly Riverupstream ofKolkata), about 150km north ofCalcuttaand south ofMurshidabad, then capital ofBengal(now inNadiadistrict inWest Bengal). The belligerents were NawabSiraj-ud-daulah, the last independentNawabof Bengal, and the BritishEast India Company. When Alivardhi Khan died in 1756, Siraj-ud-dulah became the nawab of Bengal. He orderd the English to stop the extension of their fortification. Robert Clive bribed Mir Jafar the commander in chief of the nawab's army and attacked Calcuta. He defeated the Nawab at Plassey in 1757 and captured Calcutta
