When the narrator asks the boys about their plans, they are evasive. Why don't they disclose their problems?

When the narrator asks the boys about their plans, they are evasive. They do not disclose their plans because they were proud dignified boys with a lot of self esteem who did not want to share their problems or personal life with anyone, especially a stranger like the narrator. They were hardworking kids who knew how to deal with problems and come out strong and successful.
