who is savita?

Savita is described as a young girl in a drab pink dress who sits alongside an elderly woman soldering pieces of glass in the story. As her hands moved mechanically like the tongs of a machine, we are led to wonder if she knows the sanctity of the bangles she helps make. These bangles were the auspicious mark of an Indian woman's married status. The narrator observes that one day it might suddenly dawn on her when her head is draped in the red veil, hands dyed red with henna and red bangles rolled onto her wrists. She would become a bride like the old woman beside her who was one many years ago. This woman still had her bangles but there was no light in her eyes due to hunger and penury.
