Who were residents ?

  1. A resident also known as Resident Minister is an officer who becomes the permanent resident of another country.
  2. In India, the East India Company employed Residents after the Battle of Buxar in 1764 in many Princely states including Gwalior, Lucknow and Hyderabad.
  3. The Residents had to promote the importance of the Company and were known for their implied rule over the Indian states.
  4. All through the Residents, the Company strengthened their control by deciding the heir to the throne, whom to be engaged in managerial posts, etc.

A British officer called the ' Resident ' was stationed at the ruler's court (for those who accepted subsidiary alliance). Also, no official of any other European power would be allowed in the court.

(thumbs up plzzz...)
