India lies to the east of the Prime Meridian between 68^O7’ to 97^O25’E Longitude which makes a vast longitudinal extent of India about 30^O. To have one uniform time in the country, India has accepted 82^O30’E as the Standard Meridian of India. The local time at this Meridian has been accepted as the Indian Standard Time (IST) throughout the country. It has helped to avoid a lot of confusion which would have been there by following different local times or in absence of a uniform time.
