why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

You should know that the mechanichal waves are those waves which require a medium for propogation. Sound needs a medium (solid, liquid or gas) for their propogation and can't travel without a medium.Therefore sound wave is a mechanical wave.

mechanical waves need a medium to travel , sound also needs a medium to travel so sound is called mechanical wave .  eg .> sound cannot travel in vaccum, it needs a medium like air to propogate..
