WHY DID TAPLOW STAY BACK AT SCHOOL

Taplow had to stay back in school for extra work so that he could get his remove. This was under the orders of Mr Crocker-Harris who was a tough taskmaster. Taplow had to earn his remove by doing extra work and stay back after school.
