why did the kings have inscriptions carved on copper plates and temple walls?

1) The kings had inscriptions carved on copper plates and temple walls because they served historians as different types of sources to learn about the past depending upon the nature and the period of their study.
2) Historians still depend upon coins, inscriptions, architecture and documentary records for information because they are the only evidences of past happenings.

All those inscriptions were placed on crowded places. The only reason this was done because the king (whether it maye be Ashoka or Bindusara) wanted his kingdom to know whats happening in his rule.

AS YOU KNOW ,PAPER WAS NOT AVAILABLE THAT TIME. EVEN, NO PEN WAS USED AT THAT TIME. ON THE TIMES, FOR PEN THEY USE BY TAKING A MEDIUM SIZED LEAF , THEN THEY DIP IN NATURAL COLORS . THIS WAS ATLEAST ACTUALLY AFTER BUT BEFORE AS YOU ASKED ME, THEY WAS NOT HAVING THIS TYPE OF IDEA. IF THEY WOULD, THEY WOULD BE USING IT BUT THAT TIME THOSE THINGS WERE NOT FOUND. THAT'S WHY THEY CURVE SUCH THINGS THAT WHAT ALL HAPPENED THAT WERE CURVED ON THE WALLS BECAUSE THE INFORMATION SHOULD BE KNOWN FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
