  The northern plains lie to the south of the Himalayas.  These plains are generally level and flat.  Northern plains are formed by the alluvial deposits laid down by the rivers, - the Indus, The Ganga , the Brahmaputra and their tributaries. These plains provide fertile land for cultivation, due to the silt deposits by the 4 main rivers .

That is the reason for high population in these  plains.
