WHY DOES A MATCHSTICK BURN ON RUBBING IT ON THE SIDE OF THE MATCHBOX

  • -7

observe the side of matchbox.it is rough...and when there is roughness the friction is also present.the more the roughness the more the friction ........ when a matchstick is striked on the side of the matchbox. the friction present produces a little amount of heat ... and this leads to the ignition temperature.... and hence ; the matchstick burns....

hope that helps!!!!!!1

Matchsticks mainly contain red phosphurous on the top . And as phosphurous has very low ignition temperature about 35 degree C , it is used to glow matchstick by rubbing the phosphurous through rough surface . This leads to friction and the matchstick glows.
