Why does John want the ghost to disappear before his wife appears on the scene? What impression of his wife's character do you form from his words? Experts please answer the question in a different way because the answer given in the NCERTsolutions does not satisfy me. The reason being it is short and in some aspects it is a bit confusing too.

John Hallock wants the ghost of Troy to disappear before his wife Lavinia comes to his room. This is so because he knows that Lavinia is a lady who does not trust easily. She is a suspicious lady. Therefore, instead of trying to understand the entire truth from her husband, she would start judging him on wrong grounds. This is what Hallock tried to avoid.

Hope this helps!

John feared that his wife, Lavinia, would get frightened seeing the ghost. So he wanted the ghost, Helen, to disappear before his wife stepped into the room. This shows that Lavinia was a weak hearted women who was afraid of ghosts.
