the ancient mariner stops wedding guest to tell his tale of sin and suffering .when he meets the wedding guest , he becomes desperate to tell his story . narrating it over and over again has a humbling effect on him . confession makes him feels lighter and it is a step towards repentance.......hence it provide the much needed relief to the ancient mariner..

he stops and tells his story because only by doing so he will be free from the curse.he had done a terrible thing by killing the auspicious albatross which had lifted the smog and made the wind blow.
