Why does the sky appear blue instead of violet as it has lowest wavelength in VIBGYOR?
The violet color of sunlight is scattered by the upper layer of the atmosphere. The blue color is scattered by the lower visible part of the atmosphere. So, the sky appears blue in color.
As you can see, the upper layer scatters the violet color to an extent such that its intensity becomes very low as it goes down through the atmosphere. The lower part of the atmosphere scatters the blue color, giving the sky its color. A small part of the scattered color of light along with the other less scattered colors of light reach the earth surface.
