Why does wood burn with a flame though it is a solid fuel?

Solid fuels burn with flame so wood also burns with flame because burning causes flame. It is not necessary that only liquid fuels can produce flame. Only those solid and liquid substances which vaporise on heating burn with a flame. So, wood at first burns with flame and later glows like charcol.
