Why is BeO amphoteric in nature?

BeO dissolves in strongly acidic or basic solutions. Therefore, it is an amphoteric oxide. 

Reactions with acid: BeO + 2 HCl + H2O → BeCl2 + 2 H2

Reactions with base: BeO + 2 NaOH + H2O → Na2Be(OH)4

As we know, according to diagonal relationship between aluminum and beryllium, both have similar properties. As oxide of aluminum is amphoteric in nature, similarly BeO is amphoteric.

BeO being partially covalent reacts with acids and bases to form water and is thus amphoteric in nature.

 Due to the nature of  BeO in forming covalent bonds, it forms both acid and base. So it is amphoteric in nature...
