there is a very small difference between the composition of coal & gold(diamond)

the dimond has the composition like (C-CARBON)
-C -C-C-C-
I I I I
-C-C-C-C-
I I I I
-C-C-C-C-
ie,all the 4 free elements forms the bond with other carbon atoms

& in coal only 3 free elements forms the bond with other carbon atoms & it's fourth one is free.

also coal is the initial state of diamond that is first coal is formed then that coal is converted into diamond
so if we keep our coal mines unearthed for another thousand yrs it will be converted into diamond

that's why coal is called black gold/diamond
