Why is friction called a perverse force ?

EXPERT ANSWER

Friction always opposes the relative motion between any two bodies in contact. Therefore, an extra energy has to be spent in overcoming friction. Thus it involves unnecessary expense of energy. That is the reason why friction is a perverse force.
