why is nitrogen an inert gas at room temperature? what do u mean by inert??

Inert is a term that is used to describe a substance which is very stable and not reactive. For example we often say that metals like gold, platinum, silver are inert. It means that these metals are highly unreactive.

Nitrogen gas exists as molecule of dinitrogen (N2) and the amount of energy required to break the bond between the two nitrogen atoms in Dinitrogen is very high, therefore, it does not react easily at room temperature.

This is why nitrogen (N2) gas is chemically inert.
