Why was Sherlock Holmes not grateful to Dr. Watson, his loyal and shrewd assistant?

Holmes was not grateful to his assistant Dr Watson because he had abandoned his charge, the role entrusted to him of accompanying Sir Henry Baskerville all the time. Dr Watson had come out to pursue his own line of enquiry of the man upon the moor whom he had seen on several occasions and who turned out to be Sherlock Holmes in disguise. Holmes had been residing upon the moor all along to keep an eye on the proceedings himself  and let Dr Watson report upon what was happening without the knowledge of Holmes' presence.
