Bombay was an archipelago of 7 islands. But now as we see, it is a single body. This was made through land reclamation. It was a necessary because as the population increased, the land must be utilised. Thats why land reclamation started. 

The first and major land reclamation project was in 1784 were a great sea wall was built to protect the flooding of low lying areas. The other one was the creation of marine drive and the 23 acre ballad estate.
