why were farmers reluctant to grow opium in india

Opium had to be grown on very good land in which the soil is fertile [manure]. The farmers grew pulses on this land. Thus, if they grow opium on this land, they will not have good land to grow pulses.

They were paid less for opium production.

Opium required lots of care and nurturing. If the farmers spend lots of time on this then they wouldnt have time to grow other crops.

(a) The poppy crop had to be grown on the best land which lay near the village and

were well manured. Usually these lands were used for growing pulses. If pulses

are grown in inferior land, the crops are below the required quality.

(b) Most of the cultivators did not own land. They had to pay high rent to the landlords to

acquire good quality land on lease. This impoverished the peasants.

(c) Cultivation of poppy was a difficult process. The cultivators had to spend long hours

for nurturing poppy plants. They were left with no time to care for other crops.

(d) The price the Government paid to the cultivators for growing poppy was extremely

low and unprofitable

1) Opium was a very complicated planting process. If they started planting opium they couldn't plant any other          crop after they started cultivating it.

2) They had to spend long hours nurturing the crop.

3) Some farmers had no lands and they had to take land from the government and they did not have enough            money for paying regular rent.

4) They had to sell the opium at low prices as the government wanted to buy from these farmers at low                prices and sell it at high prices for profit. so the farmers didnt get any profit.
