The cyclotron was one of the earliest types of particle accelerators, and is still used as the first stage of some large multi-stage particle accelerators. It makes use of the magnetic force on a moving charge to bend moving charges into a semicircular path between accelerations by an applied electric field. The applied electric field accelerates electrons between the "dees" of the magnetic field region. The field is reversed at the cyclotron frequency to accelerate the electrons back across the gap.

The chaged particle gains very large velocity by using a small oscillating eiectric field & allowing the charge to pass through the crossed magnetic field. It has two mag dee's which are connected to a high frequency oscillator. A strong mag field is provided by north & south poles of a strong horse shoe magnet. When a positive ion is released frm the source it accelerates by the electricfield & enters D2 frm D1.Since magneticfield is perpendicular to electric field it moves in circular orbit & keeps getting accelerated by the same process.At the end the positive ion after getting accelerated gets out of the deflector

cyclotron is used to accelerate charged particles to very high frequencies by making it to pass through a moderate electric field a no. of times .....the perpendicular magnetic field makes it  to oscillate ......as u knw it consist of  two metallic dees ... D1 & D2 ...a charged particle  like alpha particle  is placed in between the gap of two dees ...when  charged particle reaches D1 then for it D1 is +ve and D2 is -ve ...so starts accelerating towards it... when it reaches D2 for it D2 IS +ve &there is no electric field there due to the poor shielding effect of metallic dees .....as soon as the electric feild is applied ..it finds AGAIN D2 to be -ve & start accelerating towards it...in this way charged particles come in motion &after attaining high energies it get ejected by window pane ...
