rabindranath tagore established the institution in 1901. as a child, tagore hated haed going to school. he found it suffocating and oppresive. the school appeared like a prison, for he could never do what he felt like doin. so while other childen listened to the teacher, tagore 's thoughts would wander away.

the experiences of his school life in calcutta shaped tagore 's ideas of education.on growing up, he wanted to set up a school where the child was happy, where she could be free and creative, where she could be able to explore her own thoughts and feelings and desires. he did not agree with the system of disciplinary education established by the british. he felt that the lap of nature was a great place for creative learning. so he set up a school nearly 100 m away from calcutta.
