The problem of indiscipline among students has become a common feature of our social and educational life. There are strikes and agitations all over the country. Reports of indiscipline, strikes and unhappy incidents often come from colleges and universities. In fact, the growing problem of indiscipline is a cancer in the body of education. If world is a building, its foundation is discipline. Life without it is like a ship without rudder.

The chief cause of indiscipline among students is our defective system of education. The students do not find suitable employments after completing their education. Thousands of graduates are coming out of college and universities every year. They find all the doors of employment locked. This position makes them unhappy. Secondary our schools and colleges are overcrowded. Hence there is no personal touch between the teacher and the taught.

In society, young boys and girls see their elders behaving in an in-disciplined way. They see many things in cinema and practice it in class rooms. They see many in-disciplined things going on in the society. They practice what they see around them. Thus social conditions are also responsible for this growing in-disciplined among the students. The dominant cause of students in-disciplined is politics. The student leaders are attached with different political parties. The leaders of political parties exploit the students for their selfish ends.

It cannot be denied that there is lack of living role models. Everywhere students find uncertainty and confusion because their goals are not clear to them. Commercialization of education is also one of the main factors of unrest among students. In the field of education there is corruption from top to bottom. The whole machinery thinks more of its own benefits. People concerned are least bothered about the future of the young generation.

Another reason is toady students too believe in short cut methods. They are interested in short term but immediate gain by fair or foul means. For ultimate success they should remember that means must be as pure as the end itself. The cinema is also one of the causes of in-discipline among the students. From cinema they learn many evils. They follow film actors and actresses in their dress, habits, romance and scuffles.

It is suggested that our colleges and universities should give proper training in discipline. Discipline is taught in schools are colleges. The system of education should be reformed. Students should remain busy every time. Parents, teachers and politicians should present good examples of discipline before the students. Moral education should be given to them. The students should be kept away from politics. Proper arrangement should be made in colleges for co-curricular activities in order to keep the students busy. Suitable jobs must be provided for the educated young men. Reservations must vanish. Able persons should be appointed as teacher.

The problem of in-disciplined among the students is a very complex problem. It needs immediate attention. Government alone cannot solve it. All of us must co-operate.

They insult teachers. In examinations, they insist on copying. If any invigilator checks them he is threatened. All this clearly proves that our students are indiscipline.

We cannot blame the students alone for this growing indiscipline. There are many other causes of indiscipline. The most important one is the political cause. Students were encouraged by our leaders to take part in the freedom struggle. They followed all the methods that were useful for this end. Now they use those very methods against their elders, whenever attempts are made at disciplining them. Besides this, the various political parties make use of students for their own ends. For example, students were used as tools in Gujrat, Punjab, Assam and Bihar. Indeed, politics is the most important cause of student indiscipline to-day.

Our-education does not suit many of the students. They do not find of any use. They fail to get suitable jobs after completing their education. This makes them unhappy. So they behave in an indiscipline way. There is no personal touch between teachers and students. Classes are generally over-crowded. So students do not learn many things which they ought to learn from their teachers. Moreover, the educational institutions have become a means of giving employment to the unemployed. Even people who have no taste for teaching take to this profession.

In society, immature youngsters find their elders behaving in an indiscipline way. As they see so they do. Many things which they see in cinemas, they practice in the class room. In fact, social conditions are responsible for student indiscipline all round. They must be taught to shun violence and cultivate the spirit of harmony. They must learn to respect the religious views and principles of each other. This would improve the atmosphere in educational institutions.

Though the problem is a difficult one and indiscipline is fast spreading yet it is not such as cannot be solved. Only we need a will to solve it. Here are some suggestions which, if followed, will go a long way towards solving this problem.

First, politics in every form must be kept out of schools and colleges. Teachers too indulge in politics. They use students against each other. This increases indiscipline. No one should be allowed to take part in politics. Political parties must agree that none of them would use students to achieve their political ends. That politics is the chief cause of student indiscipline, is clearly brought out by the fact that during the period of emergency there was complete peace in educational institutions. Students and teachers must remain busy in their work. Student Unions should not be allowed to take the form of political parties. They must work only as literary organizations.

Only first class persons must be appointed as teachers. It is a happy sign that attention is also being paid to this aspect of indiscipline. Grades and salaries of teachers have been raised, as also their academic qualifications. Over-crowding in classes must be avoided. Varied courses should be prescribed, so that students may choose only the subjects which really interest them. All this will help in solving the problem.

Students should be kept away from the dirty life of cities. Schools and colleges should be located away from the busy cities. We should try to follow the example of the Gurukuls and Rishikuls of ancient India. There in lies salvation.

If we want to solve this problem, all of us must co-operate. Government alone cannot solve it. It must be tackled at the earliest. Growing indiscipline is poisonous for the nation. It is the interest of everyone to help in solving this problem.
