CBSE Class 10 Science: Important Topics for SA1 Exams

Meritnation|Aug 13th, 2015 08:03pm

cbse class 10 science important topicsThe SA I or the CBSE Summative Assessment I has either begun or is just round the corner. Students are busy with their last minute revisions and trying to get the most out of their study hours these days.

Meritnation is here to give your exam preparation the final polish in Science. Here are some special tips insights into how the question paper is set to test all that you have learnt in class 10, right up till September!

Take a note of all the important topics you need to brush up before the exam so that when the question paper arrives in front of you on the D-Day, you will be able to smile and say – Ha! I know this!

Unit: Chemical Substance

Reactions, reagents, laws and postulates are the lifeline of chemistry. If you know these like the back of your hand, there is no stopping you from achieving the top marks in this unit.

Chapter: 1 Chemical reactions and Equations

The answer to every question asked in the paper on this topic requires a platform of chemical equations. Therefore,

> Learn the names of chemical compounds and their chemical formulae.

> Practise writing down equations as many times as you can so that you are quite familiar with them and remember them easily.

> Don’t forget to balance the chemical equations.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Questions on the classification of the reactions ( Combination reaction, decomposition reaction, displacement reaction, double displacement reaction, precipitation reaction, neutralization reaction, oxidation and reduction reaction) are usually asked. Revise them to gather all the lower hanging fruits that can increase your score.

Chapter 2 : Acids, Bases and Salts

This topic contains more conceptual questions and numericals and is extremely important for questions related to pH will surely be asked in the paper. A student must understand and should be able to apply his knowledge to answer the questions on the effect of pH in daily life processes.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Slightly tricky questions based on pH indicators like litmus are also asked regularly.Do practise the equations of salt preparation and their uses by making charts.

Chapter 3: Metals and Non Metals

Expect questions based on the Activity Series from this chapter. The questions are generally conceptual and application based.

Sure shot questions based on the topic, Extraction of metal and corrosion can be expected in exam.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Making flow charts for metallurgical processes is a good idea to handle such questions. Circulation and excretion are very important topics from the exam point of view. The topics to be brushed up are : sectional view of the human heart , schematic representation of transport and exchange to the rest of the body, the excretory system in human beings, structure of a nephron. You can be asked to draw or label the parts. Practise drawing neat and well labeled diagrams.

Unit: World of Living

Chapter 6: Life Processes

This is an easy to learn chapter. The questions that are asked from this unit are usually straight forward and direct.Focus on revising the concepts of Photosynthesis; digestion process, enzymes involved like ptylin, pepsin, trypsin etc; structure of digestive system, thoroughly.

The topics, Break-down of glucose by various pathways to get the final product and Energy have often been asked as part of the short/medium length answer type section.

Question based on the process of oxygen and carbon dioxide transport in human beings are also commonly asked.

Chapter: 7 Control and Coordination

Do practise drawing and labelling the structure of neuron and reflex arc since they are commonly asked questions. Uses of hormones, their site of synthesis and the site of action are important from the exam perspective.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Since it is tough to remember the names and functions of all hormones, making a list and outline the interrelationship is a good way to learn them

Unit: Effects of Current

As far as Physics is concerned, simply memorizing the notes will do no good. There are units, diagrams, formulae, numericals, concepts, mathematical forms that make this subject quite different from all the others.

Chapter: 12 Effect of Current

Both conceptual and numerical questions are asked based on graphical relationships of PV, Ohm’s Law, resistance, resistivity and heating effect. Direct or application based questions on parallel and series combinations of resistances as well as on heating effect of electric current are very demanding time wise. The question may be tricky too. Make sure you spend too much time working on these questions.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: The question on commercial unit of electric energy is very important. Conversion of kW h into Joule has been asked earlier.

Chapter: 13 Magnetic Effect of Current

Practise drawing

> Field lines around a bar magnet

> Right-hand thumb rule

> Magnetic field lines of the field produced by a current-carrying circular loop

> Field lines of the magnetic field through and around a current carrying solenoid.

> Fleming’s left-hand rule and Fleming’s right-hand rule

Give more focus on topics DC, AC and EMI.

Unit: Natural Resources

Remember to revise the differences between

> Conventional and conventional source of energy

> Renewable and Non-renewable source of energy

Questions on such topics are frequently asked in the paper.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Practice writing short notes on solar energy, biogas and nuclear energy. These are direct questions that can help you score marks easily and will up your total in a jiffy! The composition of biogas is a question that is always asked in the exam so we think you should go through this topic thoroughly and attempt the question in the exam for sure.

Meritnation wished all you class 10 students the best of luck and we hope you will keep the above mentioned points in mind when you are revising for the exam.

Please take a moment to spread these tips with your friends. After all, Knowledge is the only thing that grows when shared! 🙂
