Okay. So, the news is out that compulsory class X Board exams are soon going to be a thing of the past. With an aim to remove several anomalies from our existing evaluation and marking system and with an effort to bring about a paradigm shift from the existing system to a more effective pedagogy, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a grading system in all CBSE schools from this year.

CBSE Class X board exams have been made optional from the coming academic year (2010-11). This means that the tens of thousand of students studying in class 10 need not burn midnight oil or get stressed over the ‘board exams’ in future. However, students do have an option to undergo “exam on demand” if they are interested. For competitive purposes or if a student wishes to change his/her school after class 10 he/she can opt for taking these exams.

In this new grading system, marks are replaced by grades that will be awarded after a Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) over the academic year. The academic term will be divided into two semesters each carrying both summative and formative assessments.

First Term

(April-September)

Marks weightage

Second Term

(October-March)

Marks weightage

Formative Assessment-I 10% Formative Assessment-III 10%
Formative Assessment-II 10% Formative Assessment-IV 10%
Summative Assessment (End term evaluation)- 1 20% Summative Assessment (End term evaluation)-2 40%

Thus, formative Assessments will carry 40% marks and Summative Assessments will carry 60% marks in the overall weightage for an academic year.

Under this new grading system, students of class X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments, will correspond to the range of marks scored in those assessments.

Marks Range Grade Grade Point
91-100 A1 10.0
81-90 A2 9.0
71-80 B1 8.0
61-70 B2 7.0
51-60 C1 6.0
41-50 C2 5.0
33-40 D 4.0
21-32 E1
20
and below
E2

The grading procedure will award qualifying certificates to students who obtain the qualifying grade i.e. Grade D and above. The evaluation will be done subject-wise and the grades will also be awarded on the performance of the student in each subject. Students securing less than the qualifying grade will have to improve their performance through successive attempts (up to a maximum of five attempts) in that particular subject alone. This is a much awaited effort by CBSE to eliminate the age old system of pass and fail wherein students were given just one chance to improve their performance. The subject-wise percentile score of the students will be provided to the school on demand, however the same will not be visible on the report card.

Its a good system..we just can’t look at the marks…I’m a topper of my class and for me also it was little disappointed because there will be no difference between the 1st ranker and the 2nd one…but still..many students who are not good in behavior and because of whom the whole class get spoiled….they will try to be little disciplined…because there going to be grades and descriptive indicators against attitude and behavior…

    its a nice system….
other than the grading system we should also look at other aspects… they are allowing students interestd in other activities to stand and show their talent…
not only a studious person is intelligent

i agree with sudhanshu..it’s not good 4 us becoz we will hav 2 study a lot and there is two options to ttake mcq tests or to give board exams bt both are equal hard and pressure will be wandering over our heads

I am a student of Standard IX, in YuvaBharathi

I am a little dissappointed with this 9-point grading system.

As A student of mark 91 and a student of mark 97/98
    have the same grade A1.

    We are little disappointed.

  • 14. varun rai  |  December 15th, 2009 at 12:17 am

ilike this system it help for those who cn”t get marks

  • 15. Sudhanshu  |  December 14th, 2009 at 2:03 am

a verry verry bad decision. its a step backwards. i agree wid my frnds. they want to treat class 12 students like primary ones. bt once they come to class 11th they’ll understand what ‘pressure’ means. already class 9-10 ke syllabus se bahut se imp topics hata liye gaye hain aur class 11th par dump kr diye gaye hain. n now they have removed the boards. i hv givn the boards and i understand that class 10 board exam is nothing in front of evn a class 11th terminal exam. hw wll children learn handling xam pressr? they will be ovrburdened in 12th class when they wont hav an experience of giving boards earlier in life.
lets see kitna chalta hai inka ye plan….

  • 19. pallavi  |  November 26th, 2009 at 5:04 am

hey this is nt a good system .. n will the tests be graded or we will get the scores?

  • 20. Rahul  |  November 20th, 2009 at 10:23 pm

i m satisfy with grading system bcoz it will help to those who are weak in studies. they can hidden their exact marks i think this is relaxtation 4 weaker students

  • 21. Rahul  |  November 20th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

I think this is not a good for everyone.Only hard worker children can do this because he spend almost all time in their study but everyone can’t do.I’m student of IX class.I’m also very worry about now because FA is so much so I can’t complete my FA.And now children almost care on their FA and learning work will be reduce.Ithink CBSE has to change this system not totaly,CBSE has to reduce FA so children can free from tension.

  • 22. Vikas  |  November 17th, 2009 at 6:20 am

not good for class 10 students because now student are not going to do hard work. Also who are scoring 90 and above should be treated as same. Also i want to say that in board it is easy to score marks except u r a hard worker.I am a student of 11 class non medical now.

  • 23. umair  |  November 11th, 2009 at 8:35 am

i think grading is not good yaar b’coz students will not work hard it will creat problems for the toppers
yaar b’coz student scoring 99 marks will get A1 and student getting 92 will also get A2

  • 24. Aishvarya  |  November 7th, 2009 at 4:21 am

i think this is not good for students…. the three hour magic is gone and here comes a year long toil for good grades….. this is not right…. also i agree with shalu gupta… a person who gets a 100 is treated equally with a person who gets a 91??? this is not fair….

  • 25. shalu gupta  |  November 4th, 2009 at 7:14 am

i think grading system is not good becoz a student scoring 92 and a student scoring 99 both get A1 grade.

  • 26. Rajat  |  November 1st, 2009 at 1:27 am

I think this isnt good evven for weak students……………. they wont have to work hard as anyone can manage to pass somehow?
