The United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the India-led resolution to declare June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’ caused much elation in the country. Excitement and preparations are in full swing for the first Yoga Day being observed on 21st June, 2015.

The National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT) plans to release a Yoga textbook – Yoga: A Healthy Way of Living – for students in upper primary and secondary classes. The book is expected to be released on the first Yoga Day on June 21, 2015.

The book will contain details on the history and evolution of Yoga. Students in school will study both the physical and theory of the subject, which will become a part of physical education. Various asanas, pranayams and forms of meditation will be a part of the book. There is a possibility that the subject will be made compulsory for these classes as well, in the future.

Why June 21 is Yoga Day?

June 21 is one of the two solstices. It is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. Therefore PM Modi suggested this date for observing International Day of Yoga.

The PM further stated that “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being.

The theory portion in the book contains the description and benefits of various postures and asanas, and the practical part of the book explains how different asanas have to performed, along with illustrations.

In a statement, CERT’s officiating director B K Tripathi has said “the material is explained in simple language and also profusely illustrated so that students can learn and practise it even at home. Teachers are also expected to learn the ‘asanas listed in the syllabus after some initial training in yoga asanas’”.

The CBSE has asked all its affiliated schools to conduct activities and celebrations and send back reports along with photographs to the Board. The UGC has also sent notices to colleges and universities regarding observance of the Yoga day on June 21, 2015 and sending back the action taken report about celebrations in the campuses. The Ministry conceptualized the idea of introducing Yoga practices like the Surya Namaskar for personality development and holistic wellness of students.
