FACTORS AFFECTING EVAPORATION
The rate of evaporation increases with–
• An increase of surface area:
We know that evaporation is a surface phenomenon. If the surface area is increased,
the rate of evaporation increases. For example, while putting clothes for drying up
we spread them out.
• An increase of temperature:
With the increase of temperature, more number of particles get enough kinetic
energy to go into the vapour state.
• A decrease in humidity:
Humidity is the amount of water vapour present in air. The air around us cannot hold
more than a definite amount of water vapour at a given temperature. If the amount
of water in air is already high, the rate of evaporation decreases.
• An increase in wind speed:
It is a common observation that clothes dry faster on a windy day. With the increase
in wind speed, the particles of water vapour move away with the wind, decreasing
the amount of water vapour in the surrounding

There are a number of factors that affect the rate of evaporation. Some of them are-
� Temperature-The higher the temperature, the higher is the rate of evaporation. When the temperature of water is increased the water molecules gain more energy, move faster and escape at a faster rate.
� Pressure-If pressure is applied on the surface of a liquid, evaporation is hindered, consider for example, the case of a pressure cooker.
� Surface area-Increase in the surface area exposed assists evaporation; for instance, a wet cloth spread out dries faster than when folded.
� Concentration of the substance evaporating in the air-If the air already has a higher concentration of the substance evaporating, then the given substance will evaporate more slowly.
� Concentration of other substance in the air- If the air is already saturated with other substances, it can have a lower capacity for the substance evaporating.
� Concentration of other substances in the liquid- If the liquid contains other substances, it will have a lower capacity for evaporation

The process of a liquid changing into vapour(or gas)even below its boiling point is called evaporation.Evaporation of a liquid can take place even at room temperature,though it is faster at heigher temeratures.Whatever be the temperature at which evaporation takes place,the latent heat of vaporisation must be supplied whenever a liquid changes into vapour(or gas).

FACTORS AFFECTING EVAPORATION:-

The evaporation of liquid depends mainly on on the following factors:

(1) Temperature

(2) Surface area

(3) Humidity

(4) Wind speed
