Hi Pragya,
अलंकार का अर्थ होता है 'आभूषण'। जिस प्रकार एक स्त्री आभूषणों से स्वयं को सजाती है व आभूषणों के प्रयोग से उसका सौदंर्य निखर जाता है, उसी प्रकार काव्य में अलंकारों के प्रयोग से काव्य का सौदंर्य बढ़ जाता है। काव्य में अलंकारों के प्रयोग से चमत्कार उत्पन्न होता है। हिन्दी व्याकरण में अलंकारों के इसी गुण के कारण उनका विशिष्ट स्थान है। यदि अलंकार नहीं होते तो कल्पना करो काव्य, काव्य न लगकर मात्र नीरस पंक्तियाँ बनकर रह जाता। अलंकारों के प्रयोग ने काव्य को एक तरफ सुंदर बनाया है तो दूसरी और उसे चमत्कार के गुण से परिपूर्ण किया है।
जैसे चारु चन्द्र की चंचल किरणें खेल रही है जल थल में
अलंकारों के मुख्यत: दो भेद माने जाते हैं -
(1) शब्दालंकार, (2) अर्थालंकार।
(1) शब्दालंकार के तीन भेद माने जाते हैं- (क) अनुप्रास अलंकार, (ख) श्लेष अलंकार और (ग) यमक।
(2)अर्थालंकार अलंकार छ: भेद माने जाते हैं - (क) उपमा, (ख) रुपक, (ग) उत्प्रेक्षा, (घ) अतिश्योक्ति, (ड़) अन्योक्ति, और (च) मानवीकरण।

Teh example you have given "चारु चन्द्र की चंचल किरणें खेल रही है जल थल में" which alankar is used here. Pls help with couple of more examples.

it is anupras alankar.

Is example mein "cha" shabd ki avriti(repitition) hoti hai.

aur koi udaharan:-

tarni tanuja tat tamal taruvar bahu chaye

ab dhyan se dekho toh ismein 'ta ' shabd baar baar repite ho raha hai

jaise-arni, tanuja, tat, tamal,taruvar

2) Gang ki tarang par

sang ang ang par

inmein "ang" ki avriti ho rahi hai isliye yahan bhi anupras alankar hai.

anupras alankar ve shabd hote hai jis mein kisi ek shabd ki avriti hoti hai arthat repetition of a particular word.for example tarni tanuja tat tamal taruvar bahu chaye.
