Tamil Nadu Matriculation Board
The Directorate of Matriculation Schools was set up in Tamil Nadu with the aim of providing quality education to students in the state. About 5% of the total schools in Tamil Nadu and an overall student population of a little over 25% come under the purview of the Tamil Nadu Matriculation Board. The students studying under this board follow a unique curriculum till class X, formulated by the Board of Matriculation Schools. The revision of the curriculum and syllabi of Tamil Nadu Matriculation Board schools had been brought into effect in a phased manner in the period from 2005-2008. With this, several macro as well as micro level changes were introduced, such as dividing the entire 14 years of schooling into distinctive stages with age-appropriate learning strategies and providing for seamless transitions between those stages, introducing computers at the primary stage etc.

A Common School System–Tamil Nadu government’s initiative of working towards comparable education
All students studying under the various Boards in Tamil Nadu may soon be studying from common textbooks from the year 2012! Beginning next academic year, common textbooks for classes I and VI will be made available. Though met with some resistance from members of Tamil Nadu Matriculation Board, the implementation of the Common School System has picked up pace, with the Cabinet under the Karunanidhi government already giving its approval for the implementation of the same.
Thangam Thennarasu, Minister of State for School Education said that the Tamil Nadu State Government’s decision to replace the diverse boards operating in the state–namely the Tamil Nadu State Board, Tamil Nadu Matriculation Board, Anglo-Indian Board and the Oriental Board for School Education–with a common Board called the State Board of School Education, has been taken after thorough consultation and much thought, keeping in view the interests of the students.
With this move there is an attempt to put an end to discrimination in matters of education in and making quality education available to all children in the state of Tamil Nadu. Now, that is indeed a laudable effort by the State government.
