Samacheer Kalvi - All You Need to Know

Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education or popularly known as Samacheer Kalvi is a programme initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu to integrate the whole educational system of all the schools under the state board into an Uniform System of School Education with one common syllabus, textbooks and scheme of examinations for all. Implemented by Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, 2010, the main idea behind Samacheer Kalvi was to diminish all inequality in the field of education amongst students coming from different economic, social and cultural background. The Need of Uniform System of School Education: With over 45,000 State Board School, 25 Orientals Schools, 11,000 Matriculation Schools and 50 Anglo-Indian Schools, each having different schemes of examination with different syllabus, textbooks, etc., there were huge conformity issues amongst the educational scenario of the state. With the introduction of Samacheer Kalvi, the non-uniformity was diminished between Matriculation or CBSE and Government School Students. Confusion: With the introduction of Samacheer Kalvi, there was huge confusion among the students, parents and teachers. Subjects that came under the Uniform System of School Education were Tamil, English, Maths, Science and Social Science. Over 9 crore books were printed under this common syllabus. But due to some political disputes, schools were unable to come to the decision as in which syllabus to follow. Many schools preferred to shift to CBSE board where as classes in various others were kept on hold for about a month. Court Intervention: Because of the political disputes, finally the High Court had to intervene which thereby gave the verdict of implementing Samacheer Kalvi in Tamil Nadu. The case was further moved to Supreme Court to seek permission for postponing the introduction of Samacheer Kalvi in Tamil Nadu. However, with a three bench judiciary, the Supreme Court heard the plea and finally denied stay on the verdict of the High Court and also ordered the implementation of Samacheer Kalvi within August 19, 2011. Uniform Education in Tamil Nadu: After getting views of eminent educationists, the Samacheer Kalvi finally got its approval with few changes which were reason for disputes. Finally Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education was introduced and all the schools were brought under a common syllabus and a common system of examination.
