heights and angles of different triangles. The field emerged during the 3rd
century BC, from applications of geometry to astronomical studies.
Trigonometry spreads its applications into various fields such as architects,
surveyors, astronauts, physicists, engineers and even crime scene investigators.
Some basic terms involved in heights and distances are
Trigonometry can be used to solve problems that use an angle of elevation or depression.
These problems can be visualised by drawing diagrams which involves right triangles and
hence can calculate the required heights and distances
Harsha and Deepak were planning to do a project in application of trigonometry for class 10.
They went to a nearby park with measuring tape and clinometer ( an instrument to measure
the angle of elevation and depression ) . Give answers to the questions by drawing a suitable
diagram in each cases.
( a ) They first planned to find the ratio of height of two trees. ( say h1 and h2 ) . Harsha
found the angle of elevation of two trees of height h1 and h2 as 60? and 30? respectively, by
standing in the midpoint of line joining two trees .

( b ) They saw a lamp post which is 6m high having a shadow of length 2 ?3 m, they wished
to find the elevation of Sun.
