• It helps in establishing relationships and understanding inter-relationships between different organisms.
• It helps in studying about evolution.
• It helps in creating a complete database of all life-forms which can provide a large picture about life on earth.

2. The main characteristics used for hierarchical classification are:

• Complexity of cell structure, whether the cell is prokaryotic or eukaryotic.
• Body organisation, whether the body is unicellular or multicellular.
• Mode of nutrition, whether the organism is autotrophic or heterotrophic.
