1. Differentiate between.
a) Reversible and irreversible changes.
b) Absorption and release of heat in a physical change.
c) Characteristics of physical and chemical changes.
b) Absorption and release of heat in a physical change.
Change of state of a substance is a physical change. Interconversions between solid, liquid and gaseous state of a substance involves either release of heat or absorption of heat. Molecules of a gas have the maximum energy followed by liquid and solid form of a substance has the least amount of energy. Conversion of a solid into liquid and liquid to gas requires energy and thus the process occurs with absorption of heat. Conversion of gas to liquid and liquid to solid involves release of energy in form of heat.
