1.Explain how probiotics or normal flora may help prevent the onset of a serious GI infection

2.Why can lactobacillus bacteria survive the stomach acid?

3.What could be added to yogurt as a prebiotic that allows the probiotic to thrive and then benefit the colon?

4.Why are bacteria not found in the small intestine?

plz solve

Dear student,

1.In case of a serious GI infection, the composition of the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract changes. In case of infection, the good bacteria are replaced by pathogenic strains. Use of probiotics helps in restoring the healthy bacterial strains. These strains play important role in digestion and also help to inhibit growth of harmful strains. Use of probiotics can therefore prevent onset of infections in GI tract.

2.Lactobacillus strains possess resistance to acidic pH. Laboratory studies reveal this resistance is due to high concentration of glucose that can be metabolized efficiently by these strains. Due to this ability of showing resistance, they can survive the stomach acid (HCl).

3.Yoghurt is already a rich source of Lactobacillus strains and is an example of probiotic food.

4.Bacteria are found in small intestine. They protect the small intestine from pathogens, also help in muscular activity and synthesise vitamins. However, the bacteria that are present in probiotic foods are found in large intestines (colon). But some other strains(like Escherichia coli) are also found in small intestine, thus bacteria are not absent in small intestine.
