The Duke of Chesire was in love with young Miss Virginia Otis. He fell in love with her when she "raced old Lord Bilton on her pony twice round the park, winning by a length and a half, just in front of the Achilles statue, to the huge delight of the young Duke of Cheshire, who proposed for her on the spot, and was sent back to Eton that very night by his guardians, in floods of tears". He also decided to go in search of Miss Virginia, with Mr. Otis, when she went missing. The Duke was so relieved when she returned that he hugged and kissed her. From the behavior of the Duke it is evident that he was very much in love with Miss Virginia. Moreover, at the end of the tale we find the two of them happily married.

Oscar Wilde uses some of the common tropes associated with supernatural stories, to give " The Canterville Ghost" a similar treatment. The sudden clashes of thunder, unpredictable weather and even a cockerel that refuses to crow, add to the supernatural feel of the story. The entire tale is wrought with characters like Mrs. Umney and Lord Canterville, who readily believe in the existence of a Ghost. They too add to the atmosphere and setting of the novel.
