1. What is Adam’s apple?
2. What are duct glands?
3. Name two duct and ductless glands.
4. Which control changes at adolescence?
5. How many chromosomes are present in the nucleus of a single sperm?
6. What is goiter?

Dear student,

1. At puberty, the voice box or larynx increases in size. It increases more in boys than girls. Due to large voice boxes, boys have deep voice. however in girls, the voice box is small and they have large pitched voice.
The enlarged voice box in boys can be seen as a prominent lump in the neck region. It is called Adam's apple.

2.  These glands secrete their products into ducts which takes it to the external environment. For example salivary gland, sweat gland. They are also known as exocrine glands.

3.  Duct glands: Salivary Gland, Sweat Gland & Ductless glands: Pituitary Gland, & Thyroid Gland.

4.The changes which occur at adolescence are controlled by hormones (chemical substances). These are secretions from endocrine glands & exoocrine glands.

5. Sperms contain half the number of chromosomes as found in normal  non reproductive cells of human. Non reproductive cells of human contains 46 chromosomes so, sperm contains 23 chromosomes in its nucleus.

6. Goiter is a disease of the thyroid gland in which it becomes enlarged. Iodine is a necessary constituent of a person's diet. It is a component of Tri and tetraiodothyronine, the precursor molecules from which thyroxine is made.  As the people living in south live near sea and consume more sea food which is rich in iodine than people living in north. This is the reason that goiter is very common in north India.

Dear Student,

Dear Student,

Here is your answer.

1.The Adam's apple is a lump of cartilage that sticks out from the throat. It is more prominent in males, and it serves no specific function. A person can remove or change the size of their Adam's apple with surgery. Adam's apples develop during puberty and are not present in prepubescent children.

2. A.gland that secretes externally through a duct. exocrine, exocrine gland is called as Duct gland. gland, secreter, secretor, secretory organ - any of various organs that synthesize substances needed by the body and release it through ducts or directly into the bloodstream.

3. Ducted glands secrete their products through well defined ducts like liver, salivary, sweat glands etc. Whereas Ductless glands which are also known as internally secreting glands or endocrine glands secrete their products or hormones directly into the blood stream in response to instructions from the brain.

4.The changes which occur at adolescence are controlled by hormones. Hormones are chemical substances. These are secretions from endocrine glands, or endocrine system. The male hormone or testosterone begins to be released by the testes at the onset of puberty.

5.Diploid is a cell or organism that has paired chromosomes, one from each parent. In humans, cells other than human sex cells, are diploid and have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Human sex cells (egg and sperm cells) contain a single set of chromosomes and are known as haploid.

6.A goiter  is an abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below your Adam's apple. Although goiters are usually painless, a large goiter can cause a cough and make it difficult for you to swallow or breathe.
