17 cards numbered 1,2,3........17 are put in a box and mixed thoroughly. One person draws as ard from the box. Find the probability that a number on the card is (i) odd (ii) a prime

Given, number of cards in the box = 17

∴ Total number of outcomes = 17

i)

Let A denote the event of drawing a card bearing an odd number.

Now, between 1 to 17, there are total 9 odd number as:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17

∴ Number of favourable outcomes = 9

Required probability = P(A)

ii)

Let B denote the event of drawing a card bearing a prime number.

Now, between 1 to 17, there are total 7 prime number as:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 17

∴ Number of favourable outcomes = 7

Required probability = P(A)

  • 13

no. of primes between 1-17= 8

total no. of cards= 17 so, probability= no. of favourable events/total no.of events= 8/17

no. of odds between 1&17= 9

total no. of cards= 17 so similarly, probability= 9/17
