2 moles of organic compound A on treatment with a strong base gives two compounds B and C. Compound B on dehydrogenation with cu gives A while acidification of C yeilds carboxylic acid D with molecular formula CH2O2. Identify the compounds A B C and D and write all the chenical reactions involved

Compound A is methanal (HCHO) which on treatment with a strong base (NaOH) undergoes Cannizaro reaction forming methanol (CH3OH) and sodium formate (HCOONa).

Methanol on dehydration with Cu gives back methanal.

Sodium formate on acidification gives methanoic acid (HCOOH) and the respective sodium salt.
