2. Which areas of the mountains are used by the Gujjars and Bakarwals? Why do they

choose to live in those areas?

The Gujjars and Bakarwals extensively use the Alpine grasslands in the Himalayan Mountains at a height of 3600 m.

They use these areas because of the following advantages:

  1. At high altitudes temperate forests and grasslands give way to the Alpine vegetation.
  2. Common trees in Alpine grasslands are Silver fir, junipers, pines and birches etc.
  3. Gujjars and Bakarwals are the nomadic tribes and the Alpine grasslands provides very good grazing grounds for their livestock.
