2g of ferrous sulphate crystals are heated in a dry boiling tube.
(i) List any two observations.
(ii) Name the type of chemical reaction taking place.
(iii) ?Write the chemical equation for the reaction.

Solution

i)
Ferrous sulphate is blue-green in colour.
On being heated, it loses water of crystallisation and is converted to anhydrous ferrous sulphate. The anhydrous ferrous sulphate on further heating decomposes to ferric oxide, sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide. Ferric oxide is reddish brown in colour.
ii)This is an example of decomposition reaction.
iii)Following is the equation for the reaction
