5) Explain the formation of H2O molecules on the basis of VBT

Dear Student,

In H2O molecule, the electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p4​, the one 2s and three of the 2p orbitals hybridizes to form four sp3 hybrid orbitals. Here the two of the hybrid orbitals contains one electron each which is then shared by the hydrogen atoms, while the other two hybrid orbitals has two electrons each and hence forms lone pairs. The geometry of the H2O is tetrahedral having a bond angle of 104.5 degrees as shown below.
