6. Define conductivity. How can materials be classified based on their conductivity?
Dear Student,
The ability or power to conduct or transmitting or pass the current , heat , energy is called conductivity . Or the conductance of a wire of unit length and unit area is called the conductivity
The materials are classified into the categories on the basis of electrical conductivity
1) conductors -These are the materials that allow electric current to pass through very easily
example - all metals
2) insulators or non-conductors - These are the substances that either do not allow electric current to pass or allow it to pass only in a negligible amount.
Example - Glass , Rubber , Diamond
There is also a third category of substances called as semi-conductors These are the materials that allow electric current to pass through it but not so easily as in case of conductors . Example - Silicon
