He asked Shastriji to tell Ranga that his worries were related to a girl whose name was something found in the ocean. The astrologer and narrator steered Ranga into believing that the girl was Ratna, a precious pearl found in the ocean. That is how Shastriji became a pawn in the hands of the narrator.
